BAYVIEW CEMETERY NEWS May 1999 Dear Friends: A “somewhat” spring has “somewhat” arrived, and we are preparing for visitors to the cemetery for Memorial Day. The fourth mowing and Scappoose youth cleanup are to be done by the 29th of May. HOW ARE WE GOING WITH THE MOWING AT THE CEMETERY? We, the THOMPSONS, have reached the end of our capabilities. We can no longer mow the cemetery ourselves. Last year, Barbara had a cancer and had many months of treatment. This year, Tom is in cancer treatment. Barbara appears to have come clear of her cancer, and the chances look good for Tom, but these things take a heavy toll, we find, not only in our energy level, but also in the daily drives to Portland. We had commercial people to mow the cemetery EVERY TIME last year, with Mike Perdue of Scappoose doing the last several. He also did spraying around stones. The commercial mowing used all of the contributions, and more from the interest. This year so far, there have been four mowings. The first was done with the help of volunteers from the St. Helens ELKS lodge, of which TOM is a member. They worked hard at extra things, such as removing fallen tree branches and overrunning blackberries. The second and third mowings were done by a grandson of Robert and AnnaMae Kearsley. He is saving money for school, I believe, and is doing a good job. HOW ABOUT THE MONEY? Your contributions over the years have built a perpetual fund of over $30,000. We keep this money invested. Low interest rates give us very little return at this time, however. Contributions each year pay for the current mowing, and any extra has been added to the perpetual fund in past years. Your contributions are valuable, and much appreciated. Checks should be written to: Bayview Cemetery Association. Mail to: Barbara Bennett Thompson, Secretary 33550 Blaha Road Warren OR 97053 This past year, a bequest WILLED a generous sum to the cemetery, which has been added to the perpetual fund. OFFICIAL BOARD MEETING Tuesday, May 25 at 7:30 PM, Thompson’s House, 33550 Blaha Road, (West of Bachelor Flat Rd) All are Welcome. Carol Cole, who was on the Board of Directors of the Bayview Cemetery, died last year and was buried in the Cemetery. We will miss her. Have you anyone in mind, YOUNGER THAN THE THOMPSONS, who might serve on the Board of Directors? Do you know anyone, YOUNGER THAN THE THOMPSONS, who could help MOW? Is ANYONE interested in the management of the cemetery funds?? Thank you: Noel Thompson 503-397-2679 Board Members: Ron Ross, Martha Shields, Laura Young, Noel Thompson and Barbara Thompson
