I subscribe to two of the newsgroups about Rootsweb, and its hard to believe how many messages go by with nothing of interest except to one person. I keep hoping to find real answers, about how I should be transcribing 1850 Census, for example. But there seem to be mostly problems. I DO quite a lot of lokups. As to CARDIFF, I do NOT find Cardiff or anything near it in the 16,000 names in the Cemetery index. I dont find a single instance in our transcription of the 1880 census. There is a CARDIFF, Baby handled in 1962 by St. Helens Mortuary. Only one between 1929 and 1990. And I dont find any PRESENT cardiffs in the area phone book. SOMETIMES I HAVE GREAT LUCK with lookups. Not this time. =====SORRY=========TOM========= nail@proaxis.com wrote: > Does Columbia County have a county version of OR-ROOTS such as Clatsop > County has? > > I would like to get more information on Cardiff in the later 1800's. > > I will appreciate any suggestions you may have. > > Lee Spitznogle > nail@proaxis.com > Corvallis -- From - Mon Nov 02 18:02:39 1998 Received: from brain.proaxis.com (root@brain.proaxis.com [206.163.142.1]) by sesame.columbia-center.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id RAA21023 for ; Mon, 13 Jul 1998 17:17:11 -0700 (PDT) Noel, Thanks for checking out Cardiff. Selder Creek was in CLATSOP COUNTY in 1850, when counties first happened. in 1870 Columbia western line went WEST, including the area. In 1920 Columbia line came back east a ways Selder Creek crosses the present West line of Columbia County, from Clatsop County. (operated in Columbia City during World War I). My husband's grandfather, Matts Felix Sommarstrom, was one of the owners/founders of this company. We made the mistake of loaning several old and dear photos of Columbia City and the shipbuilding company, including an amazing ship christening picture, to a cousin of his father's, Clifford Sommarstrom, back in 1982. Cliff was supposedly working on a book about the company at the time. To make a long story short, Cliff died and his wife gave everything he had collected for his book to "some guy from Oregon"---all we could ever get out of her! She has since died. Needless to say, we would really like to get our pictures back. Would you happen to recall seeing any such pictures in the last 15 years or so? We've actually made two trips down there in the last 5 or 6 years, stopping at various and sundry local historical sites, hoping to see them. Obviously haven't had any luck yet. Also, would you have any idea what the correct address is for "Larry's Site"? There's a link at Columbia Co. Historical Society to "www.hamfair.com/cchs", but it comes up "File Not Found". They are Olof R, Leonard, Stella F., Annie S, and Helmer The place called Columbia City is so small, there is only room for ONE shipyard slip. I know it was building wooden ships yet into WW2. The old guy who can tell you the history, and who is of the family and I guess still owns the land, is Harvard Anderson. 1425 4th St. Columbia City OR 503-397-2494 He loves to tell the history of everything around here. ====================== My wife says "Oh yes, Sommerstrom was the name of the place." and "Ask Harvard - he collects - he probably has the pictures" Harvard used to help at the Hist Society, so maybe he has the pictures down there. Or, if they ARE down there, Harvard would know right where they are. Bar thinks Harvards family bought the site from the Sommerstroms. She knows Harvard was in contact with Sommerstroms, getting the history of the shipyard. If you cross the RAILROAD BRIDGE into Columbia City (the Southmost entry point) and go to the river, then turn RIGHT, you get to the shipyard. Try the buildings UPHILL from the actual dock - the shoreside stuff is selling for new houses. He showed me, once, a remains of a sailing ship, in the water in the old slip. Thus I learned about really long wooden pegs in really thick timbers, holding ships together. That explains the really long wood augers in Bars fathers old toolbox. ================================ Dont tell harvard, but we chartered a sternwheeler on the Columbia once, and Harvard went immediately to the wheelhouse, and never stopped talking into the mike until we returned to dock. He has a lot of stuff tucked away in his head. Interesting guy. =================================== I'll be interested in what you learn. I'll try to get in touch with Harvard, though my guess is that he's not likely to respond to a letter .
