Rose Lane Glendale,Az ====================== I'm Noel Thompson, and we maintain a Columbia county Webpage. Your MERRILLs are certainly buried here. Looks like they are (at least partly) at the DeerIsland Kinder cemetery. Please look at my website at: http://www.rootsweb.org/~orcolumb/ and look thru the various things we have on line. Then, for details on the Kinder cemetery, you might email me again (to bartom@.... rather than to the historical society) so I dont repeat all you already know.. Nine of the Merrills are buried at Bethany Cem, which is On Church Road in Warren ( where I am, a non-existant place between Scappoose and St Helens). Thats the page 236 reference. Elizabeth Freeman Merrill OBIT goes on for many many paragraphs, and is in the 22 pamphlet(that's what we call them) volume 2 which I must send you. Deer Island is North of St. Helens, and Bethany is South of St. Helens, which might have been called Milton or Houlton. Or Gillton. I dont find William or Frank or Sarah in the dozens of Merrills,, so, did they move away? Wow - what a family. Barbara finds MERRILLs in the 1880 Census. That will tell us more. We photocopied that, also. Our MORTUARY lists (also on line) are from 1929 to 1990. We copied them in 1990. There are about ten MERRILLs, but none of those you mention. All a younger generation. In the PRESENT phone book: Stephen J Merrill 52859 NW 5th 543-6710 (again Scappoose) [Yes, she says. but he is playing golf tonight. Will get back to us.] ======================================== NEW SPELLING: barbara knows these people - recent arrivals not related to your Merrills above ================ MERRELL, David & Denise 397-0313 (IE St. Helens) MERRELL, Ronald J 57491 Alder Creek Road (543-6832) Merrills are shown in the 22 pamphlets, vol 2, which we will certainly have to photocopy for you. fOR EXAMPLE: "Emma Merrill married Elzy George who is recognized as the founder of Deer Island, being the original owner of the store...." We will send you the photocopies we just made. Sheri Kuhre Hallum ========Thompson reply======= Sheri, The name "James Kuhr nd" is found in the cemetery record of Fairview Cem. in Scappoose. nd with it means no date known. It is possible he bought a cem plot and never used it, or more likely was buried and no headstone ever placed. It has confirmed which part of Columbia County he was in... you may be able to find some land and/or probate records (most of Columbia county records have been microfilmed by LDS Family History Library, and films are available through all Branch Family history centers.) There is no record of any Kuhr family in the multi-volume pamphlets of Col.Co History. There are no KUHR listed in area phone books. Closest is KUHN Sorry we couldn't give you more info. If you write back, we would be interested in knowing the routing you took to find Col. Co. records...we always like to know what is working best. ======================== = More Thompson reply=== re KUHR family name We are working on your problem. Sure hope we can do some good. I (tom) went to the mortuary today(there is only one, it had different names and different owners, and the records, as well as possible, are now all at Columbia Mortuary here in StHelens) We looked at the 1930-38 books, each one of them. We found NO ONE named KUHR. Two things are suggested: One - we:ll call Gladys Callahan, who may know more. Bar knows her (she's a local) and I dont, yet (I'm a foreigner.) Two: He suggested calling Hustead Funeral Home in St.Johns They have, and still do, bring some people to Fairview. I suppose people who die in Portland and want to be interred here, where they came from. We'll do that 503-286-9663 For the fun of it, here is a pointer to work done in LINN county. The Jan Phillips mentioned is our organizer for Rootsweb counties, and for Cemetery transcriptions, in Oregon. Hard worker, she. http://www.dhonline.com/dhonline_news/headline/dhheadline.html#TopOfPage [Sherri said: I'm sorry to sound ignorant but I don't know what an LDS Library is.] [Thompson answered} LDS = Latter-Day Saints = Mormons = Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints The LDS church has the largest collection of Family History records in the world. We send missionaries (maybe 30 teams at a time) to photocopy records in courthouses. The records are microfilmed and one copy goes back to the source, in case their originals burn, and another copy lives in Salt Lake. Any of our 4000 or so branch libraries has indexes to all the films and can order a copy delivered to the branch. Barbara has always been LDS, and a Family Historian, working with others who want to understand their ancestors (like you), and I am a computer person. So we had to get married (30 years ago) and do these things together. 31 Years ago, I didnt know what LDS meant, either. Every record you see on our site (and thousands of other such sites) was typed from originals, one line at a time. I'm still working on the local 1850 Census, and we are involved with a group doing Ireland Death records for the church. Neat thing- we have one shutin (wheelchair bound) who is a tireless worker in transcribing from the films to computer. She has turned to that as an alternative to watching soap operas all day. When she was younger, she was an eager LDS Library manager (as was Barbara). We, bar and I, did a mission in Salt Lake, in 1988, helping manage some of the million books in the Family History library there. SO LOOK UNDER CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS The libraries are open to ALL with no charge. (I maintain about 15 computers in some of the local libraries) In the unlikely event that there is NOT an LDS library near you, we'll dig further for you. I am a DART researcher - my maiden name - and wondered what areas you have DART info on? The farthest back I've gotten is Nimrod William DART b. ~1806 Maryland. Can't seem to locate info on his parents, or where the DARTs originated from. I have a website devoted to any DART info I run across. Thank you. I have been researching the area for some time, with the center of my interest being Sauvies Island, Scapoose ,Columbia City, and Clarke cy Wash. Over the years , Ive found and collected quite a bit of original stuff to include a large collection of maps and a number of memoirs ,letters, manuscripts ,etc. most of it unpublished, concerning the area. I would like to share it and will begin monitoring and answering queries -- most all of my info is genealogical in nature, as I have already donated those items and mss. of general historical value to O.H.S. and several other societies inVancouver. Family names I have info for ---- BONSER,CAPLES,CRAWFORD,PATTERSON,HALSTEAD,COPELAND ,THOMAS,ARMSTRONG,DART,ENGLISH,SHOEMAKER,HENRICI I have also worked up much on original DLCs on Sauvies Island ,as previous published maps etc are incomplete and inaccurate ,as the land was being speculated and changing hands at a rapid rate, from the first year of the DLC law. I have about 1500 pre 1920 photos of early folks in the families mentioned , and some early Columbia,Clarke ,and Sauvies Island Views and houses. Ihave donated many to OHS , but the family photos may be of interest to fellow geneaologists . If there is some way I can help you please contact me Thanks again----- Roger Knowles Thompson 9873 E 2nd St Tucson Az 85748 (520) 296- 6876 Otho@Flash.net Columbia County Queries
