Granite, Grant County, Oregon

Granite is on the line of Baker and Grant County.

About 1902, William King, a stonecutter from Scotland and Vermont, recognized the quality of granite in a deposit near Haines. King, with his son-in-law, George Burr, also from Scotland, established the Northwest Granite in 1904 as a source for crafting monuments and building stones.

The corporation included several investors from Haines and Baker, and included William Duncan as a third principal in the firm. The enduring granite was widely used for thresholds, foundations, steps and feature walls in tuffstone buildings, the tuffstone being less durable for heavy wear.

In 1924, George Burr, Anna Wright and William Duncan incorporated and purchased the Granite works, which they operated until 1946. It was then sold to Stanley Ingram, who with his father, Stanley E. Ingram, operated until 1960, when the buildings and equipment burned. Visitors will note many granite steps and building features, a full granite building at Haines, and the Burr house in Baker.
Sand and gravel have been mined by the thousands of tons. Baker High School stadium is constructed in one such excavation. Lakes beside the Highway 84 and elsewhere are testimony to the great use of these materials for fill and concrete construction.
