Lime, Baker County, Oregon

Lime:  Located on I-84, 37 miles east from Baker city, this huge idle plant has been vacant since 1980. Stone was taken from the quarry in the late 1880’s with several of Baker City’s major buildings being constructed from that stone. The plant was expanded in 1916 and from 1923 to 1980 over 61/2 million tons were taken from the mountain area. In the 1950’s, there were over 145 employees at this major operation. Later a few miles west a new plant was constructed and now produces lime and cement, it is a large operation.
