Pocahontas, Baker County, Oregon

 Pocahontas: The Chandler Wagon Train arrived in Powder Valley in 1862 and settled Pine City at the base of the Elkhorn Mountains. The settlement was later moved a bit down the mountain and renamed Pocahontas.  The Chandler Cabin is now located in Haines.

Pocahontas School Site

The site of the second School in Baker county, 1862. A log building near the old Dave Kelly Place.  It was the first school taught in Baker Valley.

Miss Chandler, daughter of Charles Chandler of Wingville taught the fall of 1862-1863.

A frame building was erected by subscriptions in 1882.  Bill Kilbourne deeded that land to the school.

Bick Ison was then the teacher.

Scool building burned in 1955.
